Objective:

Analyze your stock’s latest earnings report in a flash, comparing key performance metrics versus consensus targets to assess the extent of any beat, meet or miss. Obtain analysis on likely analyst upgrades or downgrades following the report. Extract the highlights from management discussion and analysis and compare against the prior quarter. Compute and compare sentiment scores for the current quarter versus prior quarter to track sentiment signals from management.

Explanation:

Each quarter, markets relapse into their familiar obsession with earnings. For most investors, this period of manic information releases can generate information overload: which firms beat, which missed, and how much will consensus earnings be changed overnight. But the inferential investor knows that the purpose of earnings season is not to gamble on surprises. It is to measure progress and be able to compare milestones against their investment thesis.

Every quarterly report is a structured information gold mine where the investor needs to be able to separate out the noise and focus on the information of value: what did the the market expect, what was achieved, how did management interpret its own performance and what does this mean for the future path of cashflows? What soft signals are management providing in their language in additional to the raw numbers? For that task, we now have a powerful new assistant: a single, meticulously designed prompt that allows the modern investor to remove noise and focus their time on the valuable signals in earnings reports.

This, I propose, is the only prompt you need for earnings season.

As always, be aware that models can make mistakes. At each step, examine the response and challenge information or conclusions that appear erroneous before proceeding to any subsequent steps. If in doubt use a second model with the same prompt to verify the information and generate challenge questions and answers (CoVe process) to correct interpretations of data.
